The Background:

Throughout the school year, we pretty much spend every day sitting in front of our laptop and having classes on Zoom. In this process, I realized that remote learning isn't very efficient because both teachers and students aren't as engaged due to the limitation of functions on different video communication apps like Zoom, google hangout, etc. Especially for younger students and their teachers, as their classes require more variations of activities and interactions. How can we simulate an in-person class experience online? And what can we do to make remote learning more effective?

User Painpoints

To Start off, I first identified issues with current remote learning apps:

Limited interaction between teachers and students.

Due to the physical separation of students and teachers in remote learning environments, interactions between them become less dynamic and confined to digital screens, reducing engagement levels for young learners.

Teachers fail to demonstrate class materials clearly.

Although platforms like Zoom offer features like whiteboards, they occupy the entire screen when activated, challenging teachers to simultaneously write and monitor student engagement.

Teachers unable to manage in-class activities effectively.

Furthermore, the constraints of remote learning make traditional class activities challenging to conduct, leading to difficulties in maintaining young students' attention during classes.

With that in mind, Qooqoo’s mission is:

To create a new platform for kids to learn with ease in a remote education environment, and for teachers to teach with ease.

User Testing

From there, I mapped out a rough structure of the app and created initial mid-fi wireframes of some key features I had in mind for QooQoo based on initial findings,  and I use them for a round of user interview to testify whether my target audience would like those features or not.

I then did feature testing with six prospective users, including teachers and younger students aged 8-14, yielding the following results:

Main Features

With information collected from the first round of user testing, I was able to develop three main features:

Customize layouts to adapt different class environment.

Flexible video layouts tailored to accommodate various classroom scenarios, including presentations, discussions, and group projects, ensuring an optimal visual experience for each specific educational activity.

A visual learning experience.

A whiteboard serves as a crucial tool for teachers, enabling them to visually illustrate teaching materials and concepts. This creates a more interactive and engaging visual learning environment for students, facilitating better understanding and retention of information.

Teachers are in control of student settings.

Teachers have the ability to manage the whiteboard functions, including the capability to lock or unlock the meeting layout. Additionally, they can enable or disable face filters, offering them comprehensive control over the virtual classroom environment.

Other Features

Learn in a timely manner.

A built-in timer, stopwatch, and alarm are implemented to help teachers and students keep track of time.

Engaging teaching materials.

Built-in engagement exercises, including quizzes, polls, flashcards, and mini-games to optimize remote learning.

A sense of belonging together.

Face filters like role tags and unifying backgrounds could help everyone stay together and make classes more fun.

User Feedback

Another round of interview is conducted after all the features are developed, and here are some feedback from QooQoo’s potential users:

Learnings And Future Steps:

- Moving forward, my focus will be on further developing QooQoo, with particular attention to optimizing the user flow. Now that the primary features are in place, the challenge lies in seamlessly integrating these features to enhance the overall user experience and simplify interaction.

- Regarding layout capabilities, given that Zoom has already introduced the group feature, how can QooQoo set itself apart and tailor this feature more effectively to meet the needs of its specific target audience?
